Mantel and Shelf Clock Repair

Bench service for mantel, carriage, bracket and shelf clocks, including French, German and American movements.

Mantel & Shelf Clock Repair done properly

Mantel clocks take more abuse than any other type we see. They get carried between rooms, knocked while dusting, wound too hard, and stored in garages that swing forty degrees in a day. The good news is that they are small enough to bring in, and bench work on a mantel clock is usually the most affordable service in horology.

What this service covers

  • Clock stops after a few hours or will not run at all
  • Strike is weak, silent, or counts the wrong hour
  • Winding key turns freely — a likely broken mainspring
  • Glass, bezel or hand damage after a fall
  • Case veneer lifting or feet missing

Questions about mantel & shelf clock repair

Should I bring the clock in or call for a visit?

Bring it in. Anything you can safely carry is faster and less expensive to service on the bench.

How do I transport a mantel clock?

Remove the pendulum, wrap it separately, and pack the clock upright in a box with towels around the case. Never let a loose pendulum swing during transport.

Is it worth repairing a clock I bought at an estate sale?

Often yes. Estate clocks are frequently just dirty and dry rather than broken.
